Read Your Local Newspaper With Your Child

A newspaper has more than news. It provides pictures and information about your community that is hard to find anywhere else.

Look through a newspaper with your child—it will foster discussions and improve your child’s reading skills. Here is a game to get you started.

The Gift of Appreciation

Ask your child, “Does it feel good when someone says, thank you?” Most likely he or she will say, “Yes!” Now you and your child can do that for someone else! Look through today’s newspaper and find an article about someone helping others. Write a letter to the editor publicly thanking the person. Watch for the letter to appear in a future issue of the paper!

In addition to reading skills, the daily newspaper can be used for math activities, science experiments and so much more.
