Question of the Month

How can I motivate my child to do homework?

After a full day of learning, students look forward to after school fun and may resist homework assignments. However, homework is part of being a student! Practicing skills at home reinforces “beyond-the-classroom” learning, develops independent study habits, and helps build time- management skills. It’s important for parents to find a way to encourage kids to complete homework without tears or frustration. Here are some Kid Scoop News tips for homework success:

ALLOW TIME FOR A BREAK

Don’t force homework as soon as your child walks through the door! A break after school gives the brain time to rest, and a rested brain will be more focused when it’s time to begin.

CREATE A ROUTINE

Creating a schedule makes it easier to sit down, begin, and finish assignments. Establish an agreed time and find a special study space just for homework. Make this part of your child’s after-school routine.

DISCUSS HOMEWORK BENEFITS

Have a discussion about why homework is important. Ask: Why do you think teachers assign homework? Then listen patiently. Guide the discussion to the benefits listed above. Be understanding and encouraging … arguing only leads to frustration for everyone!

SHARE THE SPACE

Show that homework is important by sitting with your child and completing your “homework” activities—make a shopping list, research projects, write notes, or read the news. If your child gets stuck, you’ll be right there to help out.

MOTIVATE LEARNING

Appreciate your child when homework is completed. Praise persistence and raise a “high five” for seeing it through to the end! Treats like watching a favorite show, reading, cooking dinner, or playing a board game are things you can do together that build lasting memories.
