For Families

Read for Life

One surprisingly important thing a family can do to boost their child’s skill and love of reading is to subscribe to the local newspaper. It doesn’t cost much and has something for everyone.

It helps your child learn about their local community. And, as they see their parents reading the newspaper, it gives them a positive reading role model.

You and your child can have FUN playing learning games using the newspaper.

Headline Fun

Use the large type in headlines to practice letters and letter sounds.

Look for Letters

Select a letter, and with your child, circle that letter each time it appears in a headline.

Give your child a page and say, “Can you find and circle three A’s on this page?” Then let your child give you instructions to find a letter on another page.
