Healdsburg Reports: International Children’s Book Day

ibbyBack before television, books were one of the only forms of entertainment. Reading opens up a child’s imagination. Some books give facts, and some have fun stories. April 2, 2014 is International Children’s Book Day! Everyone can celebrate this day by reading any children’s book. This day can be celebrated in schools with many different activities. One fun activity could be reading a book, and then drawing and writing about what happened. International Children’s Book Day celebrates literature and famous authors such as the author of the book The Little Mermaid. The author who wrote that book is Hans Christian Andersen. International Children’s Book Day is celebrated on his birthday!

Jamie H. asked different kids at the Healdsburg Boys & Girls Club what their favorite books are. Dexter said his favorite book is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Maikali said his favorite book is Pokemon. Yvette said her favorite book is A Kissing Hand. Dominic’s favorite book is Ninjago Vs. Dragons, and he loves any book with Spiderman in it. Valeria’s favorite book is Dork Diaries. Serena said her favorite book is Unicorns and Princesses, and Miriam likes to read Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Emma’s favorite series is Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events while Kalea enjoys Goddess Girls, and Christian and Matthew’s favorite is Amulet.

There are many different ways someone can get a book to read. One way is to check out a book from a local library. In order to check out a book a kid can go to the public library or the school library. Another way to get a book for reading would be to buy a book. Someone could either order a book online or purchase one at a local bookstore. People can learn lots of new things from books. Books are important because books help people become better readers. Reading is important because it helps a kid prepare for everything they have to read as an adult.

Remember to celebrate with a favorite book on International Children’s Book Day on April 2, 2014! There are many different books to choose from, it is easy for everyone to find a book they love!!
